Samsung Electronics has extended the free 3D Video-On-Demand (VOD) service to its Indian consumers who have bought its Internet enabled, SMART TVs. The firm is not charging for 3D VOD content which can be accessed after downloading the 'Explore 3D' application from Samsung Apps.
At present it has over 30 3D clips including, children classics such as Pinocchio, The Ugly Duckling, Aladdin and the Magic Lamp among others, lifestyle videos such as Mercedes Benz Classic Collection, Takeoff-Macau, The Enchanted Hill: Inside the Hearst Castle, and IMAX documentaries like Grand Canyon Adventure, Dinosaurs of Patagonia, Dinosaurs Alive, Wild Ocean, Mummies, Ultimate Wave Tahiti, Ultimate Gs, Legends of Flight.
The company plans to ramp up its 3D VOD content significantly by the end of this year though how soon it will introduce full length 3D movies in India remains to be seen. That could be a game changer and would give more traction than just some video clips. Full length movies however would hog network bandwidth and its success as and when it launches will depend on connection speeds.
