Orkut Introduces New Feature: Support For Hashtags
The fact that Orkut is fast losing the battle for dominance against its arch rival Facebook is no secret, but this hasn't stopped the Google owned social networking site from bringing in new additions to its site. The latest one being in the form of a feature called 'support for hashtags'.
"From now on, whenever you're reading a topic, all hashtags will be automatically highlighted and will link to our improved search page, where other posts with the same tag will show up. To create a hashtag, just type # before the hashtag (no spaces allowed), for instance if you post a new topic or a reply and write #hashtagsonorkut, this hashtag will be automatically highlighted," read an official Orkut blog by Marco Wisniewski, engineer at Google.
The company has also mentioned that for now, the new hashtags will take around one day to show up in the search results, this can explain why our hashtag didn't feature in the search results when we added it to a topic, instead when we tried searching for it, a message on the site read- No results for "#hashtagsonorkut".
Recently, Facebook in its documents filed with SEC for the maiden public float had said "We compete broadly with Google's social networking offerings, including Google+, and also with other, largely regional, social networks that have strong positions in particular countries, including Cyworld in Korea, Mixi in Japan, Orkut (owned by Google) in Brazil and India, and vKontakte in Russia."
This means that Facebook still considers Orkut as a competitor in India, but this appears to be just a cautionary statement since latest comScore data clearly shows that Facebook has the upper hand in terms of both the total number of visitors as well as total unique visitors.
