Apple launches entry level 21.5 inch all-in-one desktop iMac for Rs 79,900

After a series of software announcements at the recently concluded Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2014, Apple has quietly launched an entry level model of its 21.5 inch all-in-one desktop iMac. The device features an ultra-thin design and is powered by Intel's Core i5 processors. And while the desktop currently runs on OS X Mavericks operating system, the new version OS X Yosemite will be available to buyers for free from the Mac App store this fall.

In addition, iLife and iWork come free with every new Mac. While iLife lets you edit your favourite videos with iMovie; create new music or learn to play piano or guitar with GarageBand; and organise, edit and share your best shots with iPhoto, iWork productivity apps, pages, numbers and keynote make it easy to create, edit and share documents, spreadsheets and presentations.

overview_displayThe new iMac has a 21.5 inch LED-backlit display (1920×1080 pixels resolution) with in-plane switching (IPS) that gives you bright pictures with excellent colour even if you view the display from the sides. It runs on the OS X Mavericks operating system and is powered by a 1.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor (Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz) with 3MB shared L3 cache. It has 8GB of RAM and a hard disk space of 500GB.

The graphics are provided by Intel HD Graphics 5000 and Apple has also included a high definition FaceTime camera for video calling. The iMac comes with built-in stereo speakers and dual microphones. On the connectivity front, it also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. In addition to four USB 3 ports (compatible with USB 2) and a SDXC card slot, Apple has also provided two Thunderbolt ports and an Ethernet (RJ-45 connector) in the iMac.

With the help of the Thunderbolt ports you can move data to and from peripherals up to 20 times faster than with USB 2.0 and up to 12 times faster than with FireWire 800. The dimensions of the device are 450mm x 528mm x 175mm and its weight is 5.68 kg.

Pricing & availability

The new 21.5 inch iMac can be purchased in the country starting today through select Apple Authorised Resellers for Rs 79,900. Configure-to-order options include a 1TB hard drive, a 1TB Fusion Drive, and up to 256GB flash storage.
