Chinese handset maker Oppo launches its thinnest smartphone R5 with 13MP shooter for 29,990 in India

Oppo-R5-99x150After unveiling the same in October this year, Chinese handset maker Oppo has now launched the R5 smartphone in the Indian market. The defining feature of the device is its slim design. R5 has been priced at Rs 29,990, and pre-bookings for the same will open on Jan 1, 2015 in the country.

At 4.85 mm thickness, it is one of the thinnest smartphones in the world as of now. The other contender for the slimmest smartphone title is Gionee's Elife S5.1 smartphone that is 5.1 mm thick. But the device that currently holds the crown for the thinnest smartphone is the recently launched X5Max (by Chinese handset maker Vivo), which is just 4.75 mm in thickness.

"This phone has been developed with the end user in mind. The frame has been forged nine times and then finished by hand to give a perfect sheen and feel," said Tom Lu, CEO, Oppo India.

This one has a 5.5 inch full HD AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display (1920×1080 pixels resolution) with 423 ppi pixel density and runs on the Android 4.4 KitKat OS. It is powered by a 1.5GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor with Adreno 330 GPU and has 2GB of RAM. The internal memory of the device is 16GB, but further memory expansion is not available.

Oppo R5 has a 13MP autofocus rear camera with LED flash that can record 4K videos, full HD videos, and HD slow motion videos. In addition, there is a 5MP front-facing camera for video calling. The different scene modes available in the camera include Beautify, HDR, Panorama, Audio Photo, GIF mode, Super Marco, and Raw, among others.

On the connectivity front, the smartphone has Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G LTE (depending on the region), as well as a microUSB port. The dimensions of the device are 148.9mm × 74.5mm × 4.85 mm and its weight is 155 gm. The company has provided a 2,000 mAh battery in the device, which also has GPS (with A-GPS support). It will be available in silver and gold colours.

In its price range, the smartphone will compete with the likes of Moto X 2nd Generation (Rs 29,999), BlackBerry Z30 (Rs 29,800), LG G2 (Rs 29,899), Google Nexus 5 (Rs 26,535), and Gionee Elife E7 (Rs 29,999), among others.
