22 Jun, 2016

Global payments firm PayPal has appointed Anupam Pahuja as managing director and country manager for India. Pahuja will be responsible for all aspects of PayPal's India business, it said in a statement.

Pahuja takes over from Vikram Narayan who headed PayPal's India operations from April 2014 till May 2016.

A PayPal veteran with over six years of experience with the firm, Pahuja was previously heading technology for APAC and was responsible for establishing PayPal's technology centres in India.

Prior to joining PayPal, Pahuja was managing director for India from 2008 to 2010 for NASDAQ-listed SumTotal Systems, a US-based firm that provides human resources management software and services to firms. In this role, he managed the company's global product development and led sales, marketing and professional services for the APAC region.

Pahuja has founded and sold several businesses in the US and in India and serves as a board member for several companies and non-profit organisations.

He holds a degree in computer science from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania and an MBA in International Business from Georgetown University.

PayPal was founded in 1998 and became a wholly owned subsidiary of eBay in 2002 when it had also floated its IPO.

For the quarter ended March 2016, PayPal reported that it processed 1.4 billion transactions and added 4.5 million active customer accounts, taking its total customer base to 184 million. It claimed to have processed total payment volume—the total value of payments made through the platform—worth $81 billion.

The firm is headquartered in San Jose, California and has its international headquarters in Singapore and a development centre in Chennai in India.
