Tech Mahindra to undertake Rs 500 crore smart city project in Pimpri Chinchwad

Information technology major Tech Mahindra, an arm of the diversified Mahindra Group, will execute a smart city project worth Rs 500 crore for Pune-based civic body Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).

This will be Tech Mahindra’s fifth smart city project after Kanpur, Gandhinagar, Nashik, and Jaipur. PCMC is the largest smart city project it has undertaken so far, according to a statement.

Pimpri Chinchwad is an important industrial belt in Maharashtra that comprises of over 6,000 larger, medium and small business units mainly from the engineering and automobile industries.

Tech Mahindra will provide information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure to the project which will be executed over a period of one year while operations and maintenance services will take another five years, the company said in a statement.

Under the agreement, the IT company will help the corporation in its smart city transformation with advanced technological solutions including city network; smart water, sewerage, traffic, parking, and environment; CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) surveillance; integrated control and command centre; data centre and disaster recovery centre. Tech Mahindra will also help in enabling real-time data management, alerts, and information processing to support the city’s administration.

“As part of our citizen and civil-welfare service mandate, we are committed to offering improved services through ICT led transformation which will boost the overall infrastructure in the city and also help in establishing a digital ecosystem in the city for rendering seamless smart city experience,” said Shravan Hardikar, municipal commissioner, PCMC.

The project is budgeted under the Prime Minister’s Smart Cities mission. 

Launched in 2015, Smart Cities Mission is an urban renewal and retrofitting program by the Government of India with an aim to develop 100 smart cities across the country, making them citizen-friendly and sustainable. 

A total of Rs 98,000 crore has been approved by the Indian Cabinet for the development of 100 smart cities and the rejuvenation of 500 others. The Union Ministry of Urban Development is responsible for implementing the mission in collaboration with the state governments of the respective cities.
