Sunnyvale, California headquartered cloud data services provider NetApp has completed its acquisition of cloud optimisation company Spot.

Financial details of the deal, which was announced in June, have not been disclosed. The acquisition will help NetApp offer its customers cost-saving cloud solutions.

Rebranded as ‘Spot by NetApp’, the new offering can enable enterprises to save up to 90% of their computing and storage infrastructure expenses, which typically make up 70% of total cloud spending, according to a statement.

Spot’s products offer an application-driven cloud infrastructure that uses analytics and machine learning to drive cloud resource optimisation in real-time.

“Cloud infrastructure gives application developers the ability to develop and deploy applications faster by providing resources almost instantly at any time. We are excited to join NetApp in pursuit of the shared vision to help application owners embrace and take advantage of the full power of the cloud,” Amiram Shachar, CEO and co-founder of Spot said.

Founded in 2015 by Shachar and Liran Polak, Spot has over 180 employees across offices in San Francisco, New York, Washington DC, Tel Aviv and London. Its solutions include cloud cost analysis, container management, autoscaling in cloud and reserve capacity management. Prior to starting Spot, Shachar and Polak were part of the cloud infrastructure unit of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), responsible for managing its data centres and virtualisation systems.

“Together, we are extending NetApp’s vision for helping customers unlock the best of cloud. With Spot by NetApp, we will enable customers to get more out of their cloud investment to gain competitive advantage and accelerate their business success,” Anthony Lye, senior VP at NetApp said.

This is the second acquisition by NetApp over the past few months. In March, it acquired New Jersey-based storage solutions firm Talon Storage, enabling companies to centralise data in the cloud even while running separate branch offices to reduce total cost of ownership.

In May, NetApp launched Project Astra initiative to bring enterprise-class storage and data services to container management platform Kubernetes. It will help Kubernetes users with application and data portability.
