San Jose, California based cloud vendor Nutanix has announced a few upgrades focused on managing unstructured data, to its platform.

The new upgrades will provide twice the storage performance increase without the need for complex reconfiguration while the unstructured data is being tiered.

“Customers require a variety of ways to store data 一 both structured and unstructured 一 and are looking for ways to simplify management without needing to rely on different vendors to do so,” said Rajiv Mirani, Chief Technology Officer at Nutanix.

Data tiering refers to the process where data shifts from one storage tier to another, as its state changes from hot and cold data. What is hot and cold data? Hot data refers to data that is accessed frequently and hence needs expensive storage and computational capabilities. Cold data is accessed less frequently and can be stored on slower, less powerful systems.

Nutanix also launched Nutanix Data Lens, a new data governance solution aimed at unstructured data.

The Data Lens solution will provide a view of unstructured data stored by the company, whether on the cloud or on-premise.  The insights it can generate will include access patterns, age of the data, data types and others

The new features provided should be able to help cloud clients handle unstructured data better, and reap better insights.

How will it affect customers?

Enterprises that run large scale databases will be able to do so without needing to make changes in their databases’ storage configuration, which Nutanix expects will deliver a 2x performance increase. Nutanix will also use hardware from Intel such as the Intel Optane, which will provide lower storage latency.

Nutanix also added that a new ‘replication factor storage mode’ will allow for 3x faster data processing.
