Xiaomi, the Beijing based consumer electronics company, announced on Wednesday that it has sold over 8 million smart TVs in India since 2018. The company launched its first ever television in India back in February 2018, entering the segment with a 55-inch Android-based smart TV, the Mi TV 4.

Since then, the company has succeeded in capturing a significant share of India’s television market that has seen widespread adoption of smart, connected TVs. According to a June 7 report by market research firm Counterpoint Research, nearly nine out of 10 televisions shipped in India were smart TVs. Xiaomi, in this segment, held the largest market share with 14% of of all smart TV shipments in India.

Samsung, LG, OnePlus and Sony were the other brands among top five TV manufacturers shipping devices to India, with 13%, 8%, 7% and 5% market share, respectively.

Xiaomi entered India with its Mi 3 Android smartphone in July 2014, just as the peak growth phase of India’s smartphone adoption came into being. In the final quarter of 2017, the company overtook long-time market leader Samsung to become the biggest smartphone vendor in India by market share. As of Q1 2022, it remains the largest smartphone vendor of India, even though its shipments fell by over 24% year on year – and market share fell from 28% in the first three months of 2021 to 21% this year.

Commenting on the smart TV market trends in India, Anshika Jain, senior research analyst at Counterpoint, stated in the firm’s June 2022 report, “Brands are putting more emphasis on the display aspect as there has been an increased preference for bigger display sizes. The display size range from 43 inches to 54 inches now contributes to almost one-third of the total smart TV shipments in India. In addition to this, an increasing number of models are being launched in the market with OLED and QLED technologies to enhance the user experience.”

Since entering the market with LED smart TVs, the company has since expanded to also offer OLED and QLED TVs in India.
