Adobe’s PDF capabilities will now be embedded in Microsoft Edge browser. As per a partnership signed been Adobe and Microsoft on February 9, Edge’s in-built PDF reader will be now powered by Adobe Acrobat PDF. The collaboration is expected to offer Microsoft Edge users higher fidelity, accurate colours and graphics, improved performance, strong security for PDF handling, and greater accessibility, at no cost.

Users who want more advanced digital document features — such as the ability to edit text and images, convert PDFs to other file formats, and combine files — can purchase an Acrobat subscription that enables access to these features anywhere, including directly inside Microsoft Edge via a browser extension.

Microsoft Edge users with existing Adobe Acrobat subscriptions can use the Acrobat extension inside Edge at no extra cost and without the need to switch to separate applications.

“Adobe’s PDF technology in Microsoft Edge means users will have fast and secure access to critical digital document capabilities,” said Jared Spataro, corporate vice president, Modern Work & Business Applications at Microsoft.

Microsoft and Adobe plan the transition from the built-in PDF reader in the Edge browser to Acrobat PDF in phases; initially, an opt-in option for managed devices will be offered. By March 2024, the Microsoft Edge PDF solution with the legacy engine will be completely removed.

“By bringing the global standard in PDF experience to Microsoft Edge and the billion-plus Windows users worldwide, Adobe and Microsoft are using our joint heritage and expertise in productivity to take an important step forward in making modern, secure, and connected work and life a reality,” said Ashley Still, senior vice president and general manager, Adobe.
