Google has rebranded its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Bard as Gemini, introducing a paid tier and expanding its availability on mobile devices one year after its launch.

According to a blog post, the move aligns with Alphabet's strategy to position Gemini as the primary brand for all current and future AI initiatives, akin to Microsoft's approach with its Copilot brand.

Gemini, initially introduced as a family of AI models, marks the first AI model following the merger of DeepMind and Google Brain into a unified division called Google DeepMind.

Google is also launching a dedicated Gemini App on Android and incorporating Gemini into the flagship iOS app, enabling users to perform tasks using text, voice, or images. Tasks include seeking instructions for a flat tire, creating custom images, or seeking assistance in composing text messages.

"Gemini is evolving to be more than just the models. It supports an entire ecosystem — from the products that billions of people use every day, to the APIs and platforms helping developers and businesses innovate," said Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, in a blogpost.

Gemini is accessible in over 40 languages across 230 countries, continuing to be powered by the Gemini Pro AI model. Previously, Gemini versions Pro and Nano were released, with the largest model named Gemini Ultra, as per the blog post.

Gemini Advanced, based on Ultra 1.0, is Google's most potent AI model, excelling in complex tasks and advanced coding. Users can subscribe to the Google One AI Premium Plan for $19.99/month, offering enhanced features, interactive coding, analysis tools, and more.

It is available in over 150 countries in English, with plans for expansion. Google aims to integrate Gemini into products like Workspace and Google Cloud, allowing AI Premium subscribers to use Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and more.

Android users can access Gemini via the app or Google Assistant, incorporating various voice features. The rollout of Gemini on Android and iOS phones begins in the US, expanding to additional locations and languages in the coming weeks.
