Dinesh Kumar Shrimali has joined Indian steel-making giant Tata Steel Ltd as its Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and Data Protection Officer (DPO). 

With over 22 years of experience in global leadership roles in cybersecurity, Shrimali brings a wealth of expertise to his new position, having previously served as group CISO for Welspun Group, and global head of cyber security at UPL Ltd. Before that he served as senior manager Information Security at Tata Motors, and also as a security analyst at Holcim Services (South Asia) Ltd.

A master of Engineering in Electronics & Telecommunications from Jadavpur University, Shrimali mentioned in a LinkedIn post, “I am thrilled to join one of the most established and largest steel manufacturing companies and to reunite with the Tata group. I aim to leverage the insights gained from my previous experiences to strengthen the company’s security stance.”

In his new role, Shrimali will be overseeing and managing Tata Steel’s information security strategies and policies. This includes implementing robust security measures, conducting thorough risk assessments, and developing effective incident response plans to mitigate cybersecurity risks. Simultaneously, he will ensure compliance with data protection laws and regulations, focusing on the handling and processing of personal data within the organization.

While the growing importance of cybersecurity has led to an expansion in security leadership roles in India, the importance of data protection has grown by leaps and bounds for safeguarding personal data is essential for both individuals and organisations. Shrimali's appointment as CISO and DPO at Tata Steel signals a proactive approach to addressing cybersecurity challenges and underscores the company's commitment to protecting its data assets and maintaining the trust of its stakeholders.

Notably, in FY24, Tata Steel India witnessed a 6% rise in deliveries, reaching 19.90 Million Tonnes, attributed to heightened demand from the retail, automotive, and railway sectors. A statement released on 8 April indicated that Tata Steel's steel production in India for the preceding fiscal year 2022-23 amounted to 18.85 Million Tonnes (MT).
