US-based semiconductor giant Lam Research is extending its global semiconductor fabrication equipment supply chain to include India.

The move comes as the company aims to meet the increasing demand for semiconductors by collaborating with suppliers in India to provide precision components, custom parts, high purity gas delivery systems, and other necessary assemblies for cutting-edge semiconductor wafer fabrication equipment.

With the increasing demand for semiconductors, collaboration and global engagement are becoming ever more critical. Lam Research, following its "close to customer" strategy, collaborates with thousands of suppliers worldwide.

This approach helps mitigate region-specific supply chain issues and prevents bottlenecks. Having operated in India for over two decades, Lam Research leverages its presence in the region, benefiting from proximity to customers in Asia, the company said.

Karthik Rammohan, group vice president and head of global operations at Lam Research said, “Leveraging the infrastructure and talent of our India Center of Engineering, our new proactive initiative to drive supply chain growth in India also has the capacity to contribute to improved performance, sustainability, and enhanced capabilities for our customers regionally and across Asia.”

Rangesh Raghavan, corporate vice president and general manager at Lam Research India, said, “By enhancing Lam’s strong global supply infrastructure with capabilities from local suppliers, integrators and other strategic providers, we look to enhance the flexibility of our supply chain, while further supporting the semiconductor ecosystem in India, where Lam has been a proud leader for more than two decades.”

In a significant development earlier this year, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for three semiconductor projects worth ₹1.25 lakh crore. Furthermore, Lam Research last month entered a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

The partnership focuses on deploying Semiverse Solutions, a portfolio of software solutions from Lam Research, aimed at semiconductor modeling, design automation, and integration. This initiative is expected to bolster India's semiconductor manufacturing workforce.

As part of this partnership, Lam Research plans to donate approximately $29 million (₹241 crore) in software licenses over the next two years, benefiting 2,800 students. ISM will support the establishment of infrastructure and operational costs, while IISc will undertake the "Train-the-Trainers" program at selected universities. Lam Research will also deploy a dedicated team of employees for the expansion initiative.
