LTIMindtree to overhaul PAN infrastructure in major government project

IT company LTIMindtree has been selected by the Income Tax Department to modernise the country's Permanent Account Number (PAN) infrastructure under the new PAN 2.0 project. The project, listed on the government’s public procurement portal, involves upgrading the existing systems used for managing PAN and TAN records across India.
LTIMindtree secured the contract with a bid of ₹811.5 crore (excluding taxes), with the final adjusted bid coming in at ₹792.55 crore. The evaluation was done in line with the government's request for proposal (RFP) criteria.
Confirming the development an LTIMindtree spokesperson said, “We have been awarded this prestigious PAN2.0 project which looks to enhance the PAN issuance process and security through technology-driven innovation.

The new PAN 2.0 system is expected to go live within 18 months and will aim to make the process of issuing, updating, and validating PAN and TAN numbers more efficient and user-friendly. It will also cover services like Aadhaar-PAN linking and re-issuance requests.
Currently, the Income Tax Department maintains a massive database with over 78 crore PANs and more than 73 lakh TANs. Both PAN and TAN are essential identifiers for financial transactions, tax payments, and regulatory compliance in India.
The project was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in November 2024 and is seen as a key part of India’s broader e-governance push. As announced in the 2023 Union Budget by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, PAN will eventually be used as a common business identifier across various government systems to improve coordination and reduce paperwork.
