Vizag attracts large-scale tech, data centre investments with Google, Sify announcements

Visakhapatnam, or Vizag, is fast transforming into India’s next major technology and data centre hub, with large-scale investments from global and domestic players such as Google, Adani, and Sify Technologies signalling a new phase of AI-led digital infrastructure growth in Andhra Pradesh.
On Tuesday, Adani Enterprises Ltd, through its joint venture AdaniConneX, announced a partnership with Google to develop India’s largest artificial intelligence (AI) data centre campus in Visakhapatnam. The project will also include new green energy and subsea connectivity infrastructure, marking a key step in positioning India as a global AI and cloud hub.
According to Adani Enterprises, Google’s AI hub in Visakhapatnam represents an investment of about $15 billion (₹1.25 lakh crore) over five years, between 2026 and 2030. The gigawatt-scale campus will house advanced data centre operations, supported by a robust subsea cable network and clean energy facilities to power next-generation AI workloads.

AdaniConneX and Bharti Airtel will collaborate closely with Google on the project, which is expected to accelerate digital transformation and cloud adoption across industries. The AI hub and its connectivity gateway are projected to serve as a major catalyst for economic growth in Visakhapatnam and the wider Andhra Pradesh region, while also promoting digital inclusivity.
Government estimates suggest the project could contribute an average of ₹10,518 crore annually to Andhra Pradesh’s gross state domestic product (GSDP) between 2028 and 2032 and create over 1.88 lakh jobs per year. Additionally, Google Cloud–enabled productivity spillovers are expected to generate ₹47,720 crore over five years.
In a parallel development, Sify Technologies has begun work on a ₹1,500-crore AI Edge Data Center and Open Cable Landing Station (CLS) in Visakhapatnam. Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh laid the foundation stone for the 50-megawatt facility on Sunday. Built on 3.6 acres of government-allotted land, the project aims to enhance edge-level AI computing capacity, strengthen subsea connectivity, and facilitate data exchange between India and Southeast Asian nations such as Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and Thailand. It is expected to create over 1,000 jobs and spur local innovation, Lokesh said.

Last week, Vizag was also named one of the landing sites for Meta’s multi-billion-dollar undersea cable project, Waterworth, which will connect India with the US, Brazil, and South Africa through a 50,000 km network expected to go live in 2030. Along with Mumbai, Vizag’s inclusion underscores its growing importance as a global connectivity hub.
Adding to the momentum, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is planning to set up a 1-gigawatt data centre in the city, further expanding Visakhapatnam’s hyperscale and edge computing ecosystem. Officials said these developments collectively position the city as “India’s next global digital gateway,” combining large-scale AI capacity with clean-energy-powered infrastructure to support the country’s expanding digital economy.
