Equinix opens new Mumbai data center to support AI, cloud demand in India

Equinix, a digital infrastructure company, has opened a new International Business Exchange data center, named MB3, in Mumbai. This is the company’s fourth facility in the city. The facility is built to support enterprise workloads linked to artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data-intensive applications.

The company said it has invested over $95 million in the first phase of the project. The site currently supports more than 1,370 cabinets and is designed to expand to over 5,400 cabinets. The infrastructure includes support for high-density deployments and liquid cooling systems required for AI workloads.

The launch comes amid rising demand for local data processing driven by cloud adoption, regulatory requirements, and the growth of digital services. Enterprises in sectors such as finance and technology are increasing investments in low-latency and secure infrastructure to manage data at scale.

Mumbai remains a key location for such infrastructure due to its concentration of network providers and cloud platforms. Equinix’s existing facilities in the city, along with the new MB3 site, are connected to its Chennai data center through dedicated fiber links, enabling redundancy and traffic management across regions.

The company’s platform allows enterprises to connect directly with major cloud providers and partners through private interconnection services. This setup is intended to support hybrid and multicloud deployments while meeting data residency requirements.

Equinix said its total investment in India has crossed $365 million. The company currently serves more than 300 customers in the country, including enterprises, network providers, and internet exchanges.

Cyrus Adaggra, President, Asia-Pacific, Equinix, said, “India continues to play a pivotal role in shaping Asia‑Pacific’s digital future, and the opening of MB3 strengthens our ability to support customers as they navigate new growth driven by cloud adoption, AI innovation, and increasing interconnection needs.”

Manoj Paul, Managing Director, India, Equinix, said, "As enterprises embrace hybrid multicloud and prepare for AI inferencing at scale, seamless interconnection between businesses, network service providers, and hyperscalers becomes essential. The launch of MB3 comes at exactly the right time, providing the ecosystems, interconnection density, and scalable capacity needed to power India’s next wave of digital expansion."
