Google Cloud, Meesho deepen AI partnership to power next growth phase

Bengaluru: Ecommerce marketplace Meesho and Google Cloud have entered a strategic partnership aimed at building a high-performance technology foundation to support Meesho’s next phase of growth, as the company sharpens its use of artificial intelligence across commerce, operations and seller services.

The partnership comes as Meesho scales rapidly across India, with a marketplace that now supports 961,000 sellers and serves 264 million users. Under the collaboration, the company will leverage Google Cloud’s integrated infrastructure, AI and data capabilities to strengthen operational efficiency, personalize user experiences and support large-scale AI deployments.

The move underscores a broader trend in India’s digital economy, where ecommerce players are increasingly investing in AI-driven systems to manage scale, improve discovery and simplify transactions for users in smaller cities and towns.

A key part of Meesho’s AI strategy is Vaani, its generative AI-powered shopping assistant built using Google’s Gemini models. Designed primarily for users in Tier-2 and Tier-3 markets who are more comfortable using voice than typing, Vaani allows shoppers to search products, ask questions and navigate the app through conversational interactions in Hindi and English.

The company said the assistant has gained traction quickly, with over 1.5 million users engaging with it in its first month. Internal data showed users interacting with Vaani recorded a 22% higher conversion rate and demonstrated lower order cancellations and returns.

Meesho, one of India’s largest e-commerce marketplaces, and Google Cloud now plan to scale Vaani’s capacity tenfold while strengthening multilingual and multimodal capabilities, in an effort to expand access to voice-led commerce across India.

“Serving a highly diverse user base across languages, devices and connectivity conditions requires systems deeply optimised for reliability, efficiency and accessibility. AI has been central to how we solve for this complexity,” said Sanjeev Barnwal.

Beyond conversational commerce, Meesho has migrated data workloads onto Google Cloud infrastructure, including Dataproc and Google Kubernetes Engine to accelerate processing and improve operational agility.

The company said the shift enables it to process information up to 52% faster than previous configurations, helping create predictive recommendations and connect products with relevant buyers more effectively.

Google Cloud executives framed the partnership as part of a broader shift toward "agentic AI", where systems move beyond transactional assistance to more proactive and intelligent interactions.

“By leveraging Google Cloud’s unified AI stack, Meesho is strengthening its ability to serve a massive, diverse marketplace with precision,” said Sashi Sreedharan.

Meesho has also expanded Google Cloud’s role into security and governance, adopting centralized threat monitoring capabilities as it scales infrastructure to support increasingly data-heavy AI applications.
