Larsen & Toubro Group company LTM has launched AI 1000, a workforce transformation initiative aimed at creating a pool of more than 1,000 AI-certified engineers, including the increasingly sought-after Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs), as enterprises accelerate investments in artificial intelligence.

The Mumbai-headquartered technology services firm said the programme will be anchored by a dedicated Centre of Excellence (CoE) and is designed to help enterprises adopt, deploy and scale AI solutions by developing talent that combines technical AI expertise with business and domain knowledge.

The move comes amid growing demand for FDEs, a role popularised by AI-native companies and increasingly adopted by enterprises seeking to bridge the gap between AI models and business outcomes. FDEs typically work closely with clients to translate AI concepts into production-ready solutions and measurable returns on investment.

AI 1000 follows a four-stage framework—Identify, Enable, Deploy and Govern. Engineers will be selected through an AI Readiness Index, trained through structured learning programmes and real-world projects, and subsequently deployed across AI engagements. A governance layer will track performance and continuously refine the programme based on deployment outcomes.

“The role of the technology engineer is evolving rapidly. AI1000 is built with the purpose of enhancing workforce productivity in creating tangible business outcomes. Through the AI 1000 CoE, we are building structured pathways to develop the combination of technical excellence and domain expertise to enable this purpose—and prepare our talent for the future,” said Venu Lambu, CEO and Managing Director of LTM.

The company said it already has a significant AI talent base, with more than 24,000 AI-trained associates, over 15,000 external AI certifications, nearly 84% learning penetration and over 6.5 million learning hours completed. AI 1000 formalises these efforts into a structured programme with defined role pathways, measurable milestones and governed deployment frameworks.

The announcement comes as Indian IT and engineering services firms intensify investments in AI talent and skilling programmes amid growing enterprise demand for generative AI and agentic AI solutions. Earlier this week, L&T Technology Services partnered with Databricks to develop industrial AI solutions for asset-intensive industries, while companies such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro and HCLTech have continued expanding AI-focused training initiatives and certifications across their workforces. Industry players are increasingly moving beyond broad-based AI skilling to specialised roles focused on deployment, governance and business adoption.

LTM, a Larsen & Toubro Group company, said the success of AI 1000 will be measured not by the number of employees trained but by the business outcomes delivered through AI-led engagements.
