Anthropic bets on India with local AI processing for banks and public sector

Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic on Monday announced in-country inference for its Claude AI models in India through Amazon Bedrock, allowing enterprises to process AI requests locally as demand grows for sovereign AI infrastructure.

The move will enable banks, insurers, telecom operators and government agencies to keep sensitive data within India while deploying generative AI, addressing one of the biggest barriers to production-scale adoption in regulated sectors.

The announcement marks a significant expansion of Anthropic's India strategy as the company seeks to strengthen its position in one of its fastest-growing markets. India has emerged as one of Claude's largest developer communities globally, with enterprises increasingly moving from experimental AI pilots to production deployments.

For sectors handling sensitive customer and citizen data, keeping AI inference within national borders has become a critical requirement. Financial institutions, insurers and government agencies have often been constrained by concerns over cross-border movement of data, limiting their ability to deploy frontier AI models at scale.

"Bringing Claude inference to India is a turning point for enterprise AI in this country," said Irina Ghose, Managing Director, India, Anthropic. "India's banks, insurers, telecoms, public and government agencies steward the data of a billion people. When that data can stay in India, AI moves from pilots into the systems that matter most."

Sandeep Dutta, President, AWS India and South Asia, said the offering would allow organisations to deploy frontier AI using the same trusted cloud infrastructure on which they already run mission-critical workloads, opening new opportunities across citizen services and enterprise digital transformation.

The move has also received support from enterprise customers. Ashok Vaswani, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kotak Mahindra Bank, said access to trusted frontier AI closer to home would help organisations explore the technology responsibly while maintaining control over sensitive data.

The announcement builds on Anthropic's broader expansion in India since opening its Bengaluru office earlier this year. The company said it has significantly expanded its local team while deepening relationships with enterprises, technology service providers and startups.

Several large Indian organisations have already deployed Claude across business operations. Axis Bank is using the models to improve engineering productivity, while the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is building its AiNxt enterprise AI platform on Claude. IndusInd Bank is developing an AI-powered enterprise knowledge platform, and Godrej Industries has integrated Claude into application development, business analysis and internal knowledge workflows.

India's IT services firms are also incorporating Claude into global client engagements. Tata Consultancy Services is equipping 50,000 associates with Claude while expanding AI skilling initiatives through TCS iON. Infosys is integrating Claude into its Topaz AI platform and establishing a dedicated Anthropic Centre of Excellence, while Cognizant, LTIMindtree and L&T Technology Services are embedding the models into enterprise software engineering and industry-specific AI solutions.

Beyond enterprise deployments, Anthropic is expanding its ecosystem through partnerships and developer programmes. The company said India recorded among the highest registrations globally for its Claude Partner Network after its launch earlier this year. It plans to certify 5,000 professionals through its first Claude Certification programme for partners in Bengaluru this week.

Anthropic is also investing in public-interest applications, supporting AI research at the Indian Institute of Science, healthcare startup PopVax, education non-profit Pratham, Digital Green's agricultural advisory platform and cybersecurity initiatives led by the Data Security Council of India.
