Indian conglomerate The Hinduja Group plans to invest ₹2,500 crore in Tamil Nadu across renewable energy, electric mobility and associated infrastructure, expanding its presence in one of India’s largest automotive manufacturing hubs.

The conglomerate signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government on Thursday. The proposed investment will span renewable energy, automotive and financial services, battery-charging infrastructure and digital mobility solutions, the group said.

The announcement, however, did not provide a business-wise investment breakdown, implementation schedule or projected employment numbers.

A central part of the plan involves Hinduja Renewables Energy Pvt. Ltd. exploring more than 200 megawatts of renewable-energy projects spanning solar, wind and battery technologies. The group will seek land and grid-connectivity support in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Madurai and Coimbatore.

The addition of battery technologies indicates that the proposed renewable portfolio could extend beyond electricity generation to storage, which is becoming important for balancing intermittent solar and wind power and supplying energy more consistently.

In electric mobility, OHM Global Mobility plans to deploy electric buses for public transportation in Tamil Nadu and expand its mobility-solutions value chain. The group will also examine opportunities in charging infrastructure and digital mobility, although it did not disclose the number of buses, deployment locations or details of the underlying technology platforms.

The investment aligns the group’s clean-energy operations with its existing automotive and mobility businesses, including commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland and electric bus maker Switch Mobility.

“Our ₹2,500 crore commitment is a statement of our confidence in Tamil Nadu and our desire to participate in its next phase of growth,” said Ashok Hinduja, chairman of Hinduja Group of Companies (India).

“With its strong industrial base, talent and renewable-energy potential, Tamil Nadu is well positioned to lead India’s energy and mobility transition,” he added.

Amit Saharia, group president for strategy at Hinduja Group, signed the agreement with Deepak Jacob, managing director and chief executive of Guidance Tamil Nadu, in the presence of chief minister C. Joseph Vijay and other state and company officials.

The new commitment follows a ₹7,500 crore MoU signed by Hinduja Group UK with the Tamil Nadu government in September 2025. That agreement covered investments in the state’s electric-vehicle ecosystem, including battery manufacturing, battery-energy storage systems and charging infrastructure.

Ashok Leyland subsequently broke ground in March 2026 on a ₹500 crore battery-pack manufacturing facility at Pillaipakkam, near Chennai. The greenfield plant is expected to strengthen the group’s local battery supply chain and support its electric commercial-vehicle operations.

The Hinduja Group already has a sizeable presence in Tamil Nadu through Ashok Leyland, Switch Mobility, OHM Mobility, Hinduja Tech, Gro Digital, Gulf Oil India, Hinduja Leyland Finance and Hinduja Housing Finance.

The latest agreement was part of a wider Tamil Nadu investment programme covering 97 MoUs valued at ₹67,452 crore, which the state expects to generate more than 100,000 jobs. The participating companies span automotive manufacturing, electronics, aerospace, renewable energy and digital infrastructure
