Naspers-backed Bundl Technologies, which owns and operates online food delivery platform Swiggy, has set up a new engineering team in Chennai.

The team has ten members and will operate as a startup within Swiggy, the Bengaluru headquartered company said in a statement. The team members include artificial intelligence (AI), data science, engineering and quality assurance (QA) specialists that will work in the domain of location intelligence by building AI and Big Data systems.

The systems will offer predictive business insights, correction of missing/ incorrect location data, and address normalisation, which will improve the location guidance that delivery executives receive on-ground.

The company is also planning to hire senior software development engineers and machine learning (ML) engineers for its location intelligence team, the statement added.

The team will be led by Pradnya Karbhari, vice president of engineering at Swiggy. She is a startup entrepreneur and former Google Staff engineer. Karbhari holds a PhD from Atlanta-based Georgia Institute of Technology.

Swiggy was founded in August 2014 by Sriharsha Majety, Nandan Reddy, and Rahul Jaimini. Majety and Reddy are engineers from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS)-Pilani while Jaimini is a graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.

The company claims to connect consumers to over 1,60,000 restaurant partners and stores across more than 520 cities. Swiggy primarily competes with Alibaba Group-backed Zomato. 

Last month, Swiggy raised $34 million (around Rs 263 crore at current exchange rates) as part of its ongoing growth funding round.
