Korean smartphone giant Samsung has announced that it has shipped four times more foldable devices in 2021 than it did last year. The company also revealed that its Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 foldable smartphones have outsold its total accumulative sales of foldable devices in 2020 and that too within the first month of their rollouts.  

The company claimed that the 2021 edition of foldable phones had updated software, better features, improved durability, portability, multitasking capabilities, and productivity features at a very reasonable price. In India, while Galaxy Z Fold3 5G is available at close to Rs 1.5 lakh and Galaxy Z Flip3 5G is sold at a price tag of Rs 85,000.

Samsung’s buyer survey has revealed that a stylish design, portability, and an innovative folding form factor were the top drivers behind purchases of the Galaxy Z Flip3. Likewise, buyers of the Galaxy Z Fold3 reported being drawn to its large screen for viewing content, multitasking capabilities, and productivity features, including the S Pen (stylus), as claimed by its survey.   

Faisal Kawoosa, Founder & Chief Analyst, Techarc had earlier said that with its 3rd generation of foldable Samsung has cracked the commercialisation of this form factor which is a style plus convenience device.  It’s addressing the desire of luxe segment users to differentiate distinctively as well as giving them convenience of convertibility to change screen size with the type of work/content being consumed.”

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Samsung’s sales in India, especially in 2022, as the country’s foldable smartphone market is expected to see a boom next year as a report by Techarc, claimed that the foldable smartphone market is expected to cross three lakh units in 2022 and see a jump of 638% during the current calendar year.  

Furthermore, around 81% consumers prefer to buy foldable handsets, while shopping for smartphones, as per a new CyberMedia Research (CMR) survey. The report titled ‘Unfold The Future Survey 2021’ said that the need for productivity tools and stylish lifestyle statement continue to top the consumers’ purchase choice, while pricing and device durability dominated their concerns.
