Around six million electric cars, which include battery-electric and plug-in hybrid, are expected to be shipped across the globe in 2022, up from four million in the previous year, while the public electric vehicle chargers will jump to 2.1 million units this year, shows a new Gartner report.

The report claimed that electric cars will represent 95% of total EV shipments at 6,369,769 units and the remaining five per cent will include buses, vans and heavy trucks. The total units of EV sales are projected to be 34.4% more than 4,740,903 units registered in 2021.

These apart, the report also said that the number of global public EV chargers will stand at two million by 2022.

Citing EVs as an important powertrain technology to help reduce CO2 emissions, Gartner research director Jonathan Davenport said that the shipments of vans and trucks will grow rapidly as vehicle owners see the financial and environmental benefits of electrifying their fleets. He, however, said that the ongoing shortage of chips will impact the production of EVs.

Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV), the association representing Indian manufacturers of electric vehicles, has also anticipated that the total sales of total e-two-wheelers in the country to be around 10 lakh units this year, as per a report.

Meanwhile, 2021 also witnessed a surge in electric two-wheelers sales by 132% at 2,33,971 units.
