Rockstar Games has update its user policy on fan operated Roleplay (RP) servers of  Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 5 to restrict circulation of cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) through the game’s modified multiplayer versions.

Roleplay servers allow fans to offer a wide-range of experiences in a multiplayer gaming environment built around games such as GTA 5 or Red Dead Redemption (RDR) 2. These modded multiplayer versions are run independently by fans and are different from the official multiplayer online versions of GTA 5 or RDR 2.

Though Roleplay servers are immensely popular among fans for its multiplayer gaming experiences, many have started using to trade lootboxes, NFTs and even cryptos. They have also been flourishing on similar platforms of other games such as Minecraft. In July, Microsoft said that it’s updating its guidelines to prevent use of NFTs on servers run by fans.

According to Rockstar Games, Roleplay servers is  an extension of the rich array of community-created experiences within Grand Theft Auto.  “We hope will continue to thrive in a safe and friendly way for many years to come,” the gaming company added.

In its update policy page for Roleplay servers, Rockstar said that it’s aligning it with their existing PC single player mods policy.

As part of the new policy, Rockstar has banned commercial exploitation, including the sale of loot boxes for real money or in-game currencies. It has also banned use of cryptocurrencies or crypto assets such as NFTs in Roleplay servers.
