US-based chipmaker Qualcomm, on Thursday, announced the inauguration of Chennai Design Centre with an investment of over ₹177 crore. This centre is expected to generate jobs for 1,600 skilled technology professionals. In addition to the centre, Qualcomm also announced a program supporting 6G University Research in India for academia research and leadership.

The design centre will specialise in wireless connectivity solutions complementing Wi-Fi technologies, along with contributing to Qualcomm’s global research in 5G cellular technology.

“The new Design Centre in Chennai plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of connectivity globally, especially in India. It is a critical asset to support Qualcomm’s commitment to Make in India strategy. With R&D as the centre’s core expertise, it will be a key enabler in Qualcomm’s business growth and will accelerate the growth of market adoption of advanced wireless tech solutions,” said Rahul Patel, Group General Manager, Connectivity, Broadband & Networking (CBN), Qualcomm Technologies.

To be sure, earlier this month, Qualcomm Technologies collaborated with the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), a publicly-funded research institution focused on telecom technology by the Government of India. Through this collaboration, C-DOT and Qualcomm Technologies will jointly facilitate access for selected startups, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and academia to foundational technologies and domain experts, stimulating innovation and helping them scale up their R&D efforts, accelerate the pace of commercialisation, and business development of Indian startups engaged in building indigenous telecom solutions.

As part of the collaboration, Qualcomm will support C-DOT with expertise and best practices, state-of-the-art technology, intellectual property training, and tools to enable Indian developers, academia, and OEMs, fast-tracking the development and commercialisation of indigenous telecom solutions utilising Qualcomm wireless solutions and technologies.
