BSNL and Viasat to support Indian Navy Satellite Communications upgrade

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and US-based satellite communications company Viasat will support the next phase of the Indian Navy’s satellite communications modernisation programme, scheduled to begin later this month.

The programme is part of the Navy’s effort to update its communication systems used across ships and other maritime platforms. Under an agreement between BSNL and the Indian Defence Forces, Viasat’s Ka-band satellite systems will be deployed alongside its existing L-band infrastructure. The combined setup is intended to support secure and continuous connectivity for operational use.

The upgrade is designed to move the Navy toward a multi-band and multi-constellation satellite communications model. This approach allows different frequency bands and satellite networks to be used together, reducing dependence on a single system. BSNL’s Gateway Earth Station will work with Viasat’s global satellite network to provide coverage and data capacity across operational areas.

Viasat’s international government business will deliver technical support for the programme. The company has previously provided satellite communication services to Indian government agencies for applications including disaster response communications, tsunami warning systems operated by the National Institute of Ocean Technology, and vessel tracking for the Directorate General of Shipping. It also supplies satellite connectivity for civil and government aircraft in the country.

Robert Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director, BSNL, said, "BSNL is proud to support the Indian Navy’s SATCOM modernization by providing advanced connectivity solutions through our partnership with Viasat.”

Gautam Sharma, Managing Director, Viasat India, said, “With the equipment having arrived in India and installation activities set to begin this month, we are proud to support the Indian Navy in modernizing its satellite communication capabilities.”
